Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Dana

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team held off a Dana Viking comeback on Saturday afternoon in Great Plains Athletic Conference contest in Sioux Center, Iowa 78-72.

The Defenders started fast with a 16-2 edge at the 13:06 mark and they rode that lead into the lockerroom at 39-27. Dordt withstood a run that got the lead down to seven with 2:56 left in the half and answered wtih a basket by Michael Eekhoff and a three-pointer by Mark Rowenhorst at the buzzer for a 39-27 lead.

Dordt rolled early in the second half, outscoring the hosts 11-2 at the 16:10 mark of the second half. Dana slowly chipped away at the lead and had it at 63-51 with 5:47 left in the game. A three-pointer by AJ Arkfeld cut the lead to 63-54 and a three by Jake Brandl made it a six point game with 4:48 left and a Jon Person three made it 64-61 with 3:24 in the game. Dordt got the lead to nine at the :46 mark and and were up 11 with :29 left in the game on a pair of Logan Kingma free throws. Eight points over the next :11 made it a 75-72 Dordt lead and the Defenders made three free throws at the end for the win.

Dordt made 27-55 shots and 4-11 three-pointers while converting 20-29. Dana made 26-69 field goals and 10-33 on three pointers. The Vikings made 9-25 three-pointers in the second half. Dordt held a 43-38 rebounding edge.

Logan Kingma tossed in 27 points on 8-14 shooting and 8-11 free throws. Michael Eekhoff added 20 with six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Mark Rowenhorst chipped in with 10 and Brandon Oldenkamp had eight. Brett Heidema knocked down six points and had eight rebounds.

Dana was paced by Jon Person with 17 points off the bench with seven rebounds and Jake Brandl had 15 points, all on three-pointers and Gabe Bross had 12 points and five rebounds.

Dordt is 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the GPAC while Dana is now 5-6 overall and 0-3 in the GPAC. Dordt will face Sioux Falls this Wednesday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at 8:00.
