Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Wisconsin (Eau Claire)

The Dordt College Defender men's basketball used a fast start and a good shooting night to defeat the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds in non-conference basketball at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Holiday Classic on Friday, November 28.

Dordt got out quickly with a 19-11 lead at the 13:37 mark on a lay-up by Jeremy Zeutenhorst. Eau Claire scored the next nine points to take their only lead of the game at 20-19 with 9:43 left in the half. The Defenders responded with a run of their own, retaking the lead on a Logan Kingma basket and Justin Van Kooten knocked down a three point basket to make it 24-20. A Brett Heidema basket made it 26-20 with 7:49 left in the half. A Blugold basket stemmed the tide momentarily, but a Brandon Oldenkamp three-pointer started another run, this one a 10-0 advantage to put the Defenders up by double digits. Dordt would not lead by less than ten the rest of the game.

The Defenders led 49-35 at halftime and pushed the lead to 19 on a Mark Rowenhorst three-point play at the 17:01 mark and the Defenders held the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member off the rest of the way. The Blugolds made one charge to get within 13 at the 5:36 mark but a 7-2 run salted the game away for the Defenders.

Dordt made 34-61 shots from the floor for 55.7 percent including 10-20 on three-pointers. Eau Claire converted 24-55 shots and 7-17 three-pointers. The game was marked by exceptional free throw shooting by both teams with Dordt making 14-16 and Eau Claire 19-21. Dordt held a 32-28 rebounding edge and they turned the ball over 13 times to 14 times for the Blugolds.

Logan Kingma scored 24 with 18 in the first half. Brandon Oldenkamp scored 19 and Mark Rowenhorst 17 with Michael Eekhoff going for 16. Rowenhorst and Eekhoff both had four assists and Kingma three and Kingma took down 12 rebounds. Chris Van Roekel came off the bench to get five rebounds and Justin Van Kooten came off the bench to score five and Brett Heidema had four points and four rebounds.

Dan Beyer had 21 points and Jordan Kappen and Nick Bartlett had 11 points a piece. Kappen's night included seven rebounds off the bench.

Dordt is now 5-2 while Eau Claire is 1-2. Dordt faces Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday, November 29 at 3:00.
