Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Valley City State (ND)

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men put together a strong defensive effort in the first half of their 73-57 win over Valley City State on Friday night in non-conference basketball play. The win was Dordt's first of the season in two starts and was never close in the second half.
Dordt pulled away midway through the first half when they went from up 19-12 to up 28-12 on nine unanswered points over a two and half minute span, ending the run on a Brandon Oldenkamp layup. Dordt kept the pressure on to close the first half and went into halftime with a 37-18 margin to work with. The Vikings did score a three-pointer to open the second half but the proceeded to limit the visitors to no points over the next four minutes and had a 48-21 lead on a free throw by Michael Eekhoff. Valley City State was never able to make a serious charge at the Defenders and Dordt coasted in for the 73-57 win.
Dordt was led by Michael Eekhoff's 22 points, seven rebounds and two assists. The point guard had just two turnovers in 30 minutes of play. Mark Rowenhorst was 6-9 from the floor for 15 points and had a pair of assists. Logan Kingma rounded out the double digit scoring with 12 points and six rebounds and was tops on the team in assists with four. Oldenkamp had seven points, a team high eight rebounds, three assists and four steals. Three players, Calvin Kraft, Orlando Anderson and Mike Stowman had 11 points each for the Vikings and Demetrius Young had 11 points.
Dordt is now 1-1 overall and Valley City State falls to 2-1.
Dordt faces Jamestown on Saturday, November 8 at 4:00 while Valley City State takes on Northwestern in Orange City.
