Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff -GPAC Tournament Quarterfinals

(Sioux Center, Iowa) For the second year in a row the #5 seed in the Great Plains Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament knocked off the #4 seed in the quarterfinal round of post-season play. Last year it was Dordt beating Hastings to avenge an earlier loss, this year it was Briar Cliff knocking off Dordt College 77-70, avenging two losses from earlier this season.
Dordt started slowly, getting into a 22-8 hole as Adi Cizmic spearheaded the Charger play with 12:39 left in the half. It was actually Neil Rohe who gave the Chargers their biggest lead of the game on a three-pointer. Dordt did get the lead down to a more manageable six at 25-19 with Eric Van Maanen squaring away a jumper with 6:48 left in the half. The Defenders trimmed the lead down to four at 31-27 on a Scott Van Zanten jumpe and Michael Eekhoff closed the half with a basket with :44 left after Matt Geelan had re-established a six point Briar Cliff advantage. Dordt went into the locker room down 33-29.
Briar Cliff hit two three-point shots in a row to start the second half and Dordt traded back with two-two point shots to make it 39-33 wtih 17:03 left. Briar Cliff would lead by as many as nine at 45-36 with 14:53 left but the Defenders whittled it down and eventually took their first lead of the second half on an Eric Van Maanen three-pointer with 8:24 left. The lead changed hands three times and was eventually tied on a Chad Huenink reverse layup with 5:41 left in the game to knot it at 62-62. Briar Cliff proceeded to go on a seven point run and took control of the game at 69-62 with 1:27 left in the game. Dordt would get no closer than five in losing their 10th game of the season. Briar Cliff advances to the GPAC semifinals with a 21-11 record.
Dordt was 26-58 from the floor and 4-15 on three pointers while making 14-19 free throws. Briar Cliff was 28-59 for 47.5 percent and 16-22 on free throws while sinking 7-23 three-pointers. Dordt did manage to outrebound the visitors 42-29 but had 13 turnovers to just four for the Chargers.
Dordt, without the services of their second leading scorer and rebounder, Logan Kingma, who was injured, got 21 points from Michael Eekhoff and 14 from Scott Van Zanten on 7-7 shooting from the floor. Eric Van Maanen had 12 points and Chad Huenink and Russ Griese both had nine points. Van Zanten had a game high 10 rebounds and Griese grabbed six.
Briar Cliff was paced by Cizmic with 24 and Rohe with 22.
