(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team earned an 84-72 win over the Concordia Bulldogs in Great Plains Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. On a day where the Defenders celebrated senior day and 50 years of basketball at Dordt College, the Defenders coaxed themselves to a 14 point lead at halftime and then held off a pesky Concordia team down the stretch for their 18th win and 12th in the conference.
The Defenders led almost the entire game, staking themselves to a four point lead on back to back buckets by Logan Kingma and Brian Eekhoff in the paint. The Bulldogs took their only lead of the game on five straight points by Scott Hannon at the 17:18 mark for a 5-4 lead. The Defenders answered with nine points in a row by three different players for a lead they would never relinquish. The Defenders got a double-digit lead at 18-7 on a three-pointer by Russ Griese and continued to build the lead to a 30-13 margin--the widest of the first half when Logan Kingma nailed a three-pointer. Dordt went into the half up 38-24.
Dordt pushed the lead up to 16 at 43-27 and eventually built a 17 point lead on several different occasions the last time at 50-33 on a basket by Kingma on the way to a season high 28 points. Dordt kept the lead in double figures the entire second half but could never fully shake the Bulldogs until the final minutes and eased in for the 84-72 win.
Dordt shot 27-53 from the field for 50.9 percent and 6-11 on three-pointers. The Defenders also converted 24-33 from the free throw line while Concordia was 14-19 from the charity stripe. The Bulldogs were 24-55 from the floor and made 10-28 on three-pointers. Dordt dominated the boards with a 40-26 advantage.
Logan Kingma was good for 28 points and four rebounds and Brian Eekhoff scored 17 points on 8-10 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Michael Eekhoff scored 11 and had three assists while Scott Van Zanten had seven rebounds and Chad Huenink added five points and grabbed six rebounds.
Benjamin Buhr led Concordia with 21 points and Scott Hannon pushed through 17.
The Defenders are now 18-8 overall and 12-4 in the league while Concordia drops to 10-18 and 4-13. Dordt travels to Briar Cliff on Wednesday night.
