Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Mount Marty

(Yankton, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team suffered a disappointing loss on Wednesday at the hands of the Mount Marty Lancers in Yankton, South Dakota in Great Plains Athletic Conference action. The Defenders put together an unlikely comeback to send the game to overtime but couldn't pull off the win, losing 86-81.
Dordt led early at 9-4 after a Scott Van Zanten basket with 15:36 left in the first half. The game was then tied at 9, 11, 13 and 15 before a Chad Huenink free throw and a Michael Eekhoff basket gave the Defenders an 18-15 lead with 10:46 left in the half. Mount Marty scored five points in a row and took their second lead of the game and never trailed again in regulation. Dordt had the game tied at 23-23 when Eric Van Maanen hit a three-pointer but a nine point run by the hosts put the Lancers in the driver's seat for the rest of the half, holding a 40-30 halftime advantage.
Mount Marty scored back to back buckets to start the half before Dordt charged back with an 11 point run, capped by another Eekhoff jumper with 14:49 left in the game. Dordt trailed again by two at 46-44 with 10:41 left but couldn't get over the hump and Mount Marty pushed the lead back to 16 at 60-44 with 5:30 left in the game. The Defenders were still down 65-49 with 2:36 left when they began their comeback with a Russ Griese three-pointer. A pair of Eric Van Maanen free throws kept the difference at 12 after Mount Marty made one free shot and the Defenders were still down 68-56 with 1:53 left in the game. Another Griese three pointer made it 69-61 and Mount Marty made two more free throws. An Eric Van Maanen three with 1:15 left made it 71-64 and Mount Marty answered back with a Stan Johnson two-point basket. A three-pointer by Griese at :37 remaining got it down to seven again and after two more missed free throws by Chris Filsinger, Griese drainded a three with :32 left for a 73-69 difference.
Pat Anderson made a pair of free throws only to have Griese knock down another three to make it 75-72 and after a foul, Pat Anderson missed two free throws opening the door for Griese to knock down his fifth three-pointer in less than 2:30, tying the game at 75-75 with :08 remaining and Mount Marty did not get a shot off.
Mount Marty scored the first two points of the overtime but Dordt answered with a Logan Kingma free throw after a technical foul on the Mount Marty bench and Eric Van Maanen gave Dordt a brief lead at 78-77 with 2:30 left. Mount Marty took the lead back for good on a pair of Anderson free throws with 1:42 left and dordt was never closer than two the rest of the game in falling for the fourth time in conference play and their eighth time this season. The win was Mount Marty's third of the year in the GPAC.
Dordt was 28-68 from the floor and 9-20 on three pointers. The Defenders made 16-26 free throws--2-7 in overtime and were outrebounded 42-41. Mount Marty made 25-45 free throws, were 5-15 on three-pointers and 28-63 overall from the floor. Dordt had 15 turnovers to 10 for the Lancers.
Dordt was led by Eric Van Maanen's 22 points. Van Maanen joined the Dordt College 1000 point club with a three-pointer in the first half. Michael Eekhoff scored 17 before fouling out. Griese scored 19 on 7-12 shooting and 5-7 three-pointers. Scott van Zanten had seven and Logan Kingma six. Brian Eekhoff had a team high eight rebounds and Chad Huenink grabbed seven along with Kingma. Michael Eekhoff and Mark Rowenhorst both had four assists.
Pat Anderson led six players in double figures for the Lancers with 17 and Stan Johnson had 15 rebounds with 12 points.
Dordt will host Concordia on Saturday in their next game.
