Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff
February 2, 2008
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team earned a come from behind victory over the Briar Cliff Chargers in Great Plains Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center. The Defenders capped an improbable 12-point comeback with a Scott Van Zanten putback and free throw to take the victory.
Briar Cliff led from the outset, getting back to back three-pointers from Kurt Webb and Adi Cizmic and eventually built a 13-6 lead with 15:33 left in the half on a Kelvin Adams basket. Dordt cut the lead to 13-12 on a three-pointer by Eric Van Maanen but the outside shoot would not go in with consistency for the Defenders in their first game in February. Briar Cliff pushed the lead out to 11 at 27-16 with 10:38 left in the half and Dordt trimmed the difference down to four with 3:47 remaining on a Scott Van Zanten leaner. Dordt managed to hang within five at halftime 39-34.
The second half continued to be difficult work for the Defenders as they got to within 43-40 after a flagrant foul was called with 15:39 left but the charge ignited Briar Cliff and they built a 52-40 lead with nine points in a row, the capper being a Brock Cooper jumper with 11:51 left in the game. A Russ Griese basket in the lane cut the lead to ten but another Kelvin Adams basket pushed the lead to 54-42 with 10:07 left in the game.
A Michael Eekhoff basket with 9:42 cut the lead to single digits and Dordt would never trail by double digits again. Even with 6:28 left in the game the Chargers still had a 58-50 lead after Neil Rohe made a three-pointer.
Mark Rowenhorst found the bottom of the basket on a three pointer of his own to make it 58-53 and a Chad Huenink lay-up cut the lead to 58-55. After another Rohe basket the Defenders got a jumper by Eric Van Maanen with 3:47 left and after a missed Charger attempt Logan Kingma drilled a jump shot to keep the pressure on at 60-59 with 2:58 left. Neither team scored on their next possessions and Dordt finally got the go ahead basket, a Michael Eekhoff layup with 1:57 left and got a stop on the other end only to have a foul called on the rebound. Briar Cliff's Matt Geelan made both free throws for a 62-61 lead. Michael Eekhoff took a jumper with 1:05 left that wouldn't go in but Scott Van Zanten had a putback for a 63-62 advantage.
After a Briar Cliff timeout the Defenders committed a foul on a post entry play and Cizmic made two free throws with :30 left for a 64-63 lead. Dordt took the ball, and after a timeout, got a three-point shot by Eric Van Maanen that wouldn't go in. A put back by Michael Eekhoff was no good but Scott Van Zanten was there for a putback and got fouled and made the free throw with :06.6 left in the game. Briar Cliff got one final shot off at the buzzer with Brett Ratcliff going the length of the floor, but missed on the 20-footer from straight on.
Dordt was 22-58 from the floor and 6-22 on three-pointers while converting 16-22 free throws. Briar Cliff was 24-52 from the field and 9-20 on three point shots while making 7-12 free throws. Dordt held a 34-31 rebounding edge and Briar Cliff committed 16 turnovers to 11 for the hosts.
Dordt was led by Michael Eekhoff's 13 points while Eric Van Maanen and Scott Van Zanten each added 12. Logan Kingma added nine and Brian Eekhoff added seven.
Brian Eekhoff led the team with nine rebounds and Scott Van Zanten grabbed eith while Kingma snatched five and Van Zanten had three assists.
The Chargers were led by Neil Rohe's 18 and Adi Cizmic added 15. Both seniors also had five rebounds.
