Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Midland Lutheran

(Fremont, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender men’s basketball team earned a 75-58 win over the Midland Lutheran Warriors in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball in Fremont, Nebraska on Saturday.

The Defenders started sluggish, getting down 22-14 with 11:31 left in the first half and proceeded to tie the game up and eventually took the lead at 30-27 on a three-pointer by Russ Griese. The Defenders continued to build on the lead, getting up 40-31 when Midland Lutheran got a buzzer beater to cut the difference to 40-34 at halftime. Eric Van Maanen helped carry the Defenders early to keep Dordt in the game with five two-point baskets and a pair of free throws.

Dordt started the second half with a pair of back to back buckets by Logan Kingma and Eric Van Maanen for a double-digit lead. Dordt continued to pull away with a 63-43 lead when Chad Huenink made a pair of free throws at the 12:09 mark. Midland Lutheran bounced back with a nine point run cutting it to 63-52 with 7:02 left in the game. A Michael Eekhoff gave Dordt a 14 point advantage and the Defenders kept the Warriors at arm’s length the rest of the way for the 17 point road win.

Dordt was led by Michael Eekhoff’s 21 points and Eric Van Maanen added 19 while Scott Van Zanten had 14. Dordt made 27-53 shots from the floor and converted 17-19 free throws. Logan Kingma had six points and a game high eight rebounds. Michael Eekhoff had eight assists and three steals while Brian Eekhoff scored six. Chad Huenink had four points and four rebounds in a reserve role.

Midland Lutheran was 23-59 from the floor and 6-7 on free throws. Luke Simons led them with 17 points and six assists.

Dordt is now 14-7 overall and 8-3 in the conference while Midland Lutheran are 3-19 overall and 1-11 in the conference and have lost 17 in a row.

Dordt travels to Orange City on Wednesday, January 30 to face Northwestern at 8:00.
