Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Morningside

(Sioux Center, Iowa) In a clash of ranked teams at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa the Morningside Mustangs took a 78-67 win over the Dordt College Defenders in Great Plains Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.

The Defenders led briefly at 4-3 and 6-5 but the Mustangs took the lead for good on a Thomas Pargett three-pointer wtih 16:46 left in the first half. Dordt trailed by eight, 21-13 with 9:54 left in the half before getting back to within 23-2 on a Logan Kingma jumper with 7:48 left. The two teams traded buckets to the 29-28 mark when Monringside started a 17-3 run to close the first half.

Down 15 at halftime, the Defenders fell behind by 17 on a basket by Jack Rother to open the second half. Dordt proceeded to go on a run that had them outscore the Mustangs 14-0 over a six minute stretch to get within 48-45 on a Michael Eekhoff basket with 13:47 left. Dordt eventually cut the lead all the way down to 52-51 when Jonathan Ferrie got a putback with 10:34 remaining but the Defenders never took the lead with Morningside building the lead back to an eventual nine point cushion on a three-pointer by Jack Rother with 6:41 to go. An Eric Van Maanen three gave Dordt a second wind and the Defenders were down six when Thomas Pargett hit a three pointer with 3:22 left in the game that pushed the lead to nine and Dordt couldn't get closer than seven the rest of the game before falling to the top-ranked team in the nation. Earlier in the day Dordt College entered the rankings at #24.

The Mustangs were 29-57 from the floor and 8-19 on three-pointers while Dordt was 24-62 and 5-14 from behind the ring. Morningside held a 38-33 rebounding edge.

Dordt was led by Michael Eekhoff's 18 points and six rebounds with four assists. Brian Eekhoff had 12 points and Logan Kingma had 11 points. Scott Van Zanten scored nine and had six rebounds and Eric Van Maanen added eight. Morningside got 21 from Jack Rother and 14 from Pargett and Seth Atkins 13.

Dordt slips to 13-7 overall and 7-3 in the conference while Morningside is now 21-0 and 10-0 in the league.
