Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Mount Marty

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team earned an 80-66 win over the visiting Mount Marty Lancers in Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Saturday, January 5 in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Defenders used a late first half run to take control of the game and never led by less than ten the rest of the game for their fourth win of the GPAC season.
The two teams were tied eight times in the first 10:00 minutes with the last tie coming at 22-22 when Justin Peters scored on a jumper. Dordt proceeded to score the next six poitns on a pair of Brian Eekhoff jumpers, a Chris Van Roekel lay-up and a Michael Eekhoff basket. After Mount Marty momentarily stemmed the Dordt tide the Defenders got rolling again, pushing the lead to 14 at halftime when Logan Kingma made a pair of free throws with :04 left.
Mount Marty narrowed the gap to 10 with 17:15 left but the Defenders kept their lead and eventually got up by 14 at the midpoint of the half on a basket by Scott Van Zanten. Mount Marty got the lead down to ten one more time on a pair of Skyler Bolks free throws with 9:14 left but the Defenders got a Mark Rowenhorst three-pointer and a two-pointer also by Rowenhorst to extend the lead to 15 with 6:37 remaining and the Lancers never made a serious charge again in falling 80-66.
Six players hit for double figures for Dordt with Michael Eekhoff and Brian Eekhoff both scoring 13. Mark Rowenhorst and Scott Van Zanten both had 11 and Eric Van Maanen and Logan Kingma both had ten. Van Zanten had six rebounds to lead Dordt and Brian Eekhoff and Rowenhorst both had five as Dordt held a 32-24 rebounding edge. Van Zanten also had four assists and four steals.
Mount Marty got 15 from Nathan Fischer and 13 by Stan Johnson while Pat Anderson tossed in 11. Johnson had a game high six rebounds.
Dordt shot 31-58 from the floor and 5-10 on three-pointers while making 13-19 free throws. Mount Marty was 24-50 from the floor and 4-10 on three's with a 14-16 free throw day. Mount Marty committed 17 turnovers and Dordt 14-five in the second half.
Dordt is now 10-6 overall and 4-2 in the GPAC while Mount Marty falls to 5-12 and 0-5. Dordt hosts Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, January 12 at 4:00 while Mount Marty goes to Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, January 9.
