Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Black Hills State-Black Hills State Classic

(Spearfish, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team lost an 87-76 decision to the host school on day one of the Perkins Classic hosted by Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota.

The Friday, December 29 contest was blown open early when they Yellow Jackets made five straight three-point attempts in building an early 17-7 lead. Black Hills State pushed the lead up to as many as 17 in the first half with Dordt hanging relatively close with Brian Eekhoff scoring eight early points. The Defenders went into the half down 45-31. Black Hills State made 8-12 three-point attempts in the first half in building the lead.

Dordt fought back to within 47-36 early in the second half and had the ball but missed on a shot attempt. The miss allowed Black Hills State to start a run of three-three pointers in a row to push the lead to 56-36.

Dordt did make one final charge, getting to within 79-71 on a three-pointer by Mark Rowenhorst with a little over two minutes remaining in the game. Cain Atkinson was 8-8 from the free throw line in the final minutes to preserve the win for Black Hill State.

The Defenders were led by Brian Eekhoff's 18 points on 6-10 shooting and 6-6 on free throws. Chad Huenink came off the bench for 13 points and led the team with eight rebounds. Michael Eekhoff was Dordt's third double-digit scorer with 11. Eric Van Maanen had six points and nine assists with two steals and Scott Van Zanten, Logan Kingma and Mark Rowenhorst all had seven points each.

Dordt was 27-67 from the floor for 40.3 percent while Black Hills State was 26-47 from the field for 55.3 percent and were 11-20 on three-pointers. Dordt was outrebounded 39-26 but committed just 12 turnovers to 24 for Black Hills State.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Atkinson's 31 points--17 of them in the first ten minutes of the game. Luke Enos had 15 and 11 rebounds.

Dordt is now 8-6 overall while Black Hills State goes to 7-6. The Defenders will face South Dakota Tech on Saturday at 5:00 (Central Time) in Spearfish, South Dakota.
