Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Dana

(Blair, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team was unable to overcome a sluggish performance against the Dana Vikings in Blair, Nebraska on Saturday, December 15 in falling 81-77 in their final league action before Christmas.

The Defenders started well with a 7-3 advantage on a made basket by Logan Kingma. Dana fought back immediately, tying the game at seven with 15:57 left in the half and then building a 17-12 lead on a basket by Gabe Bross with 11:22 left. Dordt bounced back with a six point run to take the lead briefly on a jump shot by Brian Eekhoff with 9:52 remaining. The two teams played evenly for the rest of the half with seven ties, the last one at 35-35 with 3:33 left in the half. Dana built up another six point lead but Michael Eekhoff responded with a basket with under a minute left and the teams went to the break 42-38 with Dana in front.

Dordt took their first lead of the second half on a basket by Eric Van Maanen by three-point range for a 53-52 difference with 16:12 left. Van Maanen scored on a lob with 15:33 left to cap a nine point run that pushed Dordt up 55-52. Dana had an answer as they did all afternoon, tying the game at 56 with 13:05 left. Ties ensued at 58, 60 and 63 and 65. Dana took a 72-68 lead and the Defenders responded with six in a row wtih Eric Van Maanen making two free throws and Michael Eekhoff two baskets--the last one with 2:47 remaining. Dana tied it at 74 with 2:17 left on a basket by Gabe Bross and after a missed shot by Dordt with 1:14 left Dana got the long rebound and an uncontested lay-up for a 76-74 lead that they would never give up. Dordt would get as close as 78-77 on a three-pointer by Logan Kingma but Dana made their free throws and cinched the game wtih a made free throw by Eric Maassen for the final margin of 81-77.

Dordt was 29-67 from the floor for 43.3 percent and 14-21 on free throws. Dana was 26-59 from the floor for 44.1 percent and 7-19 on three-pointers and 22-26 on free throws. Dordt outrebounded the hosts 44-31 and committed 16 turnovers.

Dordt was led in scoring by Eric Van Maanen's 22 points and Michael Eekhoff had 19 while Logan Kingma had 14 and Brian Eekhoff 10. Brian Eekhoff had 11 rebounds and Michael Eekhoff seven while Chad Huenink came off the bench for six rebounds.

Dana was paced by Gabe Bross and Doug Huston with 18 points each and Trent Mumma added 16.

Dordt is 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the GPAC while Dana is 7-8 and 1-4.

Dordt will travel to Spearfish, South Dakota to face South Dakota Tech and Black Hills State on December 28 and 29.
