(Crete, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team earned an 83-67 win over the Doane Tigers in Crete, Nebraska on Saturday, December 8. The Defenders never trailed in winning their second conference game in a row and the win marked the first win for the Defenders in Crete, Nebraska since 2002.
The Defenders scored on the first two possessions of the game on a lay-in by Eric Van Maanen and a three-pointer by Logan Kingma. Five straight points by Mark Rowenhorst later in the half gave the Defenders a seven point lead with 11:29 left in the half at 24-17 and the Defenders gradually pushed the lead up to 15 on a pair of free throws by Brian Eekhoff with 4:48 to go to intermission.
Doane tried to inch closer, getting the lead down to nine with four straight points but the Defenders recovered to score eight of the final ten points on the way to a 47-32 halftime lead
Doane mounted one serious charge in the second half, trimming the lead down to 51-44 but back-to-back buckets by Chad Huenink got the lead back to double digits and Doane never got closer than 11 the rest of the game.
Dordt put the game away with seven straight points from the 4:43 mark to the 1:49 mark with Michael Eekhoff hitting a free throw, Eric Van Maanen two field goals and Chad Huenink a basket.
The Defenders made 32-64 shots from the floor and were 8-16 from the free throw line. Doane converted 27-52 shots from the floor and 6-18 three-pointers. Dordt took advantage of 14 trips to the free throw line to make 11 while Doane converted just 7-13. The Defenders won the rebounding battle 41-24 and had 11 turnovers to 12 for the Tigers.
Dordt was paced by five players in double digits. Eric Van Maanen had 15 points and Scott Van Zanten 13. Brian Eekhoff, Mark Rowenhorst and Chad Huenink each had 10 points. Logan Kingma and Michael Eekhoff had nine points each and Van Zanten had 11 rebounds. Michael Eekhoff had six rebounds and Chad Huenink and Kingma had five rebounds each and Eekhoff also had five assists.
Doane was paced by Scott Neuhalfen with 18 and Jack Lind had 11. Both were reserves for the Tigers.
Dordt travels to Dana on Saturday, December 15.
