(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team turned in a 79-65 win over the University of Sioux Falls Cougars on Wednesday night in Sioux Center for their second Great Plains Athletic Conference win of the season.
The Defenders never trailed in the game, taking a 19-12 lead on a three-pointer by Eric Van Maanen with 11:57 left in the first half and got up 25-16 moments later on a Russ Griese three-point shot. Sioux Falls responded with an seven point run to trim the lead to 25-23 with Adam Herther scoring all seven points on a pair of three-pointers and a two-point field goal.
Leading 27-25, Dordt got in transisition regularly over the final six minutes, scoring ten points in a row to go up 37-25 and never led by less than ten the rest of the way in building a 47-29 halftime edge on a tip in by Brian Eekhoff as time expired.
Sioux Falls cut into the lead in the second half with five points in a row but every time the Cougars made a charge the Defenders eventually found an answer, leading by as many as 21 after an Eric Van Maanen three pointer with 14:36 left in the game. The closest Sioux Falls would get was 10 at 69-59 with 3:52 remaining but a pair of Eric Van Maanen lay-ins off steals bookending two free throws by Michael Eekhoff gave Dordt an insurmountable leadof 75-59 on the way to a 79-65 final.
Van Maanen led the Defenders with 27 points on 11-18 shooting and 5-8 on three-pointers. Michael Eekhoff had 16 points and Brian Eekhoff had 14 points and nine rebounds with Scott Van Zanten tossing in 12 points with nine rebounds. Chad Huenink came off the bench for six first half points and Dordt made 28-60 shots from the floor and outrebounded the Cougars 35-24. Dordt committed 12 turnovers and Sioxu Falls 17. Sioux Falls made 26-49 shots for 53.1 percent, led by Tyler Fluth's 20 points and Adam Herther ended with 13 points and Tut Yual added 12 poins with a team high seven rebounds.
Dordt is now 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the league while Sioux Falls drops to 1-2 and 3-7. Dordt College travels to Crete, Nebraska on Saturday to face the Doane Tigers in a 4:00 game.
