(Mitchell, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball lost a 95-78 decision on the road to the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball on Wednesday night in Mitchell, South Dakota.
Dordt started quickly, getting a two point field goal and three-pointer each from Eric Van Maanen and Logan Kingma for a 10-0 lead. Wesleyan still trailed at 18-10 when Chade Huenink made a basket with 12:34 and proceeded to outscore the Defenders 18-2 to turn the deficit into a 28-20 difference with 8:12 left in the half.
Dordt made a run to get back to within two after being down ten with 4:07 left, but another charge by the Tigers pushed the difference to eight at 42-34 at halftime.
A basket by Eric Van Maanen made the difference six to open the half and the difference was six again when Michael Eekhoff converted a three-point play with 17:24 remaining. Wesleyan proceeded to go from up 47-41 to 62-43 over the next three and a half minutes and their lead was never smaller than 12 the rest of the way.
Dordt was 30-62 from the floor for 48.4 percent and 8-14 on three-pointers while Wesleyan was 32-60 for 53.3 percent and 7-21 on three-pointers. Wesleyan took advantage of 31 trips to the free throw line, making 24 while Dordt made 10-14. Wesleyan also held a 39-26 rebounding advantage.
Eric Van Maanen scored 20 and Logan Kingma had 17 and Brian Eekhoff 11. Scott Van Zanten had nine points and team high six rebounds and Michael Eekhoff and Josh Taylor each had seven points with Eekhoff dising out three assists.
Wesleyan's Colby Fitzgerald led all players with 27 points and Preston Broughton had 15 points and ten rebounds with three assists, two blocks and two steals.
Dordt is now 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the GPAC while Dakota Wesleyan is 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the league. Dordt will host Sioux Falls in their next outing on December 5 in Sioux Center.
