November 24, 2007

(Sioux Center, Iowa)

The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team handed the Bellevue Bruins their first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon in day two of the Defender Gold Classic. Dordt led start to finish in taking a 76-57 decision over the Nebraska school and upped their record to 6-3 one day after losing to William Penn by a point. The loss was Bellevue's first in ten starts.

Dordt scored the first nine points of the game with Logan Kingma scoring five of them during that stretch. A Scott Van Zanten three-point shot with 12:46 left in the first half made it 18-6 when Bellevue mounted their first charge to cut the lead down to 18-15 with 10:01 left in the half on a basket by their leading scorer--Klaye Rowe. Dordt responded with back to back buckets by Kingma--one of them a three and Brian Eekhoff and Eric Van Maanen both made a free throw a piece to re-establish a double digit lead and Dordt went into the half with a 38-26 advantage with Mark Rowenhorst making a three-point play in the closing minute.

Dordt nearly ran away with the game early in the second half when they got up 47-30 with 15:36 left in the game on a shot by Jonathon Ferrie. Bellevue had a charge in them though and the defensive minded team trimmed the lead all the way to 53-47 with 7:51 left on a made free throw by Tyler Tomasek.

Kingma started another Dordt run, this one would put the game out of reach with Kingma making two free throws and then converting a basket and the Defenders were back up by double digits and finished off the 76-57 win.

Dordt limited Bellevue to 19-48 shooting from the floor for 39.6 percent and 3-10 on three-pointers. Dordt was 27-58 from the floor and 5-11 on three-pointers and tossed in 17-24 free throws. Dordt owned a decided advantage on the glass with a 43-21 difference.
