Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. William Penn-Defender Gold Classic

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders fought an uphill battle all night against the William Penn Statesmen at the Defender Gold Classic and lost a 77-76 decision to the 23rd ranked team in the NAIA Division II men's basketball pre-season poll.
The Defenders started slow, getting behind by as many as eight in the first half at 28-20 with 4:20 left on a basket by the Statesmen's Alex Ronbinson. Dordt trailed 36-30 at halftime despite making just 26.7 percent of their shots from the floor in the first half.
Dordt made a charge early in the second half, getting the lead down to one almost immediately when Logan Kingma drained a three-pointer with 18:39 left in the game but the Statesmen pulled away for a five point lead at 41-36 and again at 45-40. Dordt tied the game at 46-46 with 13:49 left in the contest when Josh Taylor made a straight on free throw line jumper and Jonathan Ferrie had a tip in during the run. Russ Griese actually tied the game with his second field goal of the game.
As they would all night, William Penn had an answer, pushing the lead back to six at 52-46 before Dordt made a nother charge, getting to within one on two different occasions before finally taking their first lead of the game on a three-pointer by Eric Van Maanen with 7:09 remaining. The lead was short lived and William Penn scored six in a row over the next two minutes for a 63-59 advantage. The teams continued to trade buckets with Michael Eekhoff tying the game on a lay up with 1:53 left in the game at 71-71. After a made free throw by Joseph Powell Dordt got the lead back on a pair of Kingma free tosses with 1:10 remaining. Another two free throws by Powell with :47 left gave the Statesmen the lead but Brian Eekhoff drew a foul on the Dordt offensive end and made both free throws with :30 left to give Dordt a lead. After a defensive stop the Defenders were fouled and Logan Kingma made one of two free throws with :17 left for a 76-74 lead.
With a glimmer of hope, the Statesmen found Adam Weig for a 25-foot three-pointer from the right wing that he drained with :08 left for a 77-76 lead. After a Dordt timeout the Defenders went the length of the court and had a Michael Eekhoff shot blocked out of bounds with :01.4 remaining and after a pass was tipped out the Defenders ahd :00.6 to work with. A shot by Kingma as time expired on the ensuing inbounds play was short and the Statesmen had the one point lead.
Dordt made 21-57 shots from the floor for 36.8 percent for the game and were 12-23 in the second half. The Defenders made 29-44 free throws while William Penn was 30-63 from the floor for 47.6 percent and made 9-22 three-pointers for 40.9 percent. Dordt outrebounded the visitors 43-39. Dordt had 12 turnovers to 16 for William Penn.
Kingma led Dordt with 16 poins while Van Maanen had 12. Scott Van Zanten and Michael Eekhoff both had 11 and Brian Eekhoff 10. Chad Huenink and Russ Griese came off the bench for five points each. Van Zanten led all players with nine rebounds while Michael Eekhoff had four assists and two steals.
William Penn was paced by Joseph Powell's 21 points and Andre Thompson had 13 and Kris Miller 12. Weig made three-three pointers for his nine points including the game winner and Luke Letzring had eight rebounds.
Dordt is 5-3 with the loss snapping a five game winning streak. William Penn is now 7-1 and have won seven in a row. The two teams have met two times with William Penn squeeking out one point wins both times.
Dordt will now face Bellevue on Saturday, November 24 at 4:00. Bellevue was an 83-77 overtime winner over Sioux Falls in the first game of the Classic on Friday night. Sioux Falls and William Penn play Saturday at 2:00.
