Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Northwestern

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team turned in a 104-89 win over the previously unbeaten Northwestern Red Raiders in Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Tuesday night at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Dordt and Northwestern played to a 40-40 tie through one half with Dordt holding as much as a ten point lead in the first half at 21-11. Northwestern responded with a 13-3 run to tie it at 24 when Kale Wiertzema knocked down a jumper with 9:36 left in the first half. The two teams were then tied at 28 and again at 34 with 3:17 left in the half. Dordt had a little breathing room in the closing minutes when Eric Van Maanen made a pair of free throws for a 40-37 lead but Northwestern scored the last three points of the half to tie it 40-40 at intermission. With a minute left in the half Dordt College starting point guard Michael Eekhoff went down with an ankle injury and did not return.

Dordt College scored the first points of the second half on a Scott Van Zanten basket but Northwestern eventually came back to take a 45-44 lead with 18:08 remaining in the game on a three pointer by Wiertzema.

Dordt responded with a basket by Brian Eekhoff to take the lead and would never trail again, eventually going on an 11 point run capped by a Logan Kingma three-pointer with 15:51 left in the game. Northwestern would get as close as three, the last time at 65-62 with 11:04 left but the Defenders answered with a three pointer by Mark Rowenhorst and a basket by Eric Van Maanen to extend the lead to eight and Dordt eventually built an 11 point lead at 76-65 with 7:20 remaining in the game.

Dordt threatened to blow the game open with a 14 point lead at 83-69 on a basket by Van Maanen and Northwestern resorted to fouls to extend the game; the Defenders made 16-18 free throws in the final two minutes for their fifth win in a row.

Dordt was led by Logan Kingma's 23 points and Eric Van Maanen and Scott Van Zanten each had 20. Brian Eekhoff added 12 and Mark Rowenhorst 11 with Michael Eekhoff's ten first half points completing the double digit scoring. Dordt made 36-65 shots in the game and 28-41 free throws including 23-31 in the second half.

Dordt outrebounded the visitors 40-31 with Brian Eekhoff snaring eight and Logan Kingma seven while Scott Van Zanten had six. Van Maanen had four steals.

Northwestern was led by Kale Wiertzema's game high 26 points on 10-16 shooting while Curt Schilling and Chad Schuiteman had 15 and 13 respectively. Schuiteman had a game high 17 rebounds and eight assists.

Dordt is now 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference while Northwestern is 5-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Dordt hosts William Penn on Friday night at 8:00 and Bellevue Saturday at 4:00.
