Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Graceland

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team used a strong first ten minutes of the second half to forge an 87-74 win over the Graceland Yellow Jackets in non-conference basketball at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa on Saturday afternoon.
The Defenders controlled most of the first half only to have the Yellow Jackets charge back in the closing minutes to send the game to halftime tied at 38-38.
Dordt led in the first half by as many as 29-22 with 8:19 left and were up 32-25 on a tip-in by Logan Kingma with 6:44 left in the half. Graceland went on an 7-0 run from down 35-29 to up 37-36 before a Jonathan Ferrie free throw ended the run with 2:27 left in the half and a bucket by Mark Rowenhorst tied the game at half 38-38. Graceland would lead twice early on in the second half, the last time at 43-42 but the Defenders responded with seven points in a row on four field goals by four different players to take control and pushed the lead to double digits with 8:36 remaining in the game on a three-pointer by Logan Kingma and Graceland never got the lead under 10 the rest of the way.
Dordt featured balanced scoring with Scott Van Zanten making 15 points, including 11-13 free throws. Logan Kingma, Michael Eekhoff, Brian Eekhoff and Chad Huenink all had 13 and Eric Van Maanen and Mark Rowenhorst had eight and seven respectively. Michale Eekhoff was the leading rebounder with eight along wtih four assists and Van Zanten had six rebounds with four steals. Huenink snared five rebounds and had two steals but Dordt was outrebounded 43-34. The Defenders had eight turnovers in the game to 22 for the Yellow Jackets and Dordt converted 31-66 shtos from the floor and 22-34 free throws.
Graceland was led by Mike Malat with 22 and Andrew Williams added 13 with 12 rebounds.
Dordt has won four games in a row and stand 4-2 heading into the GPAC opener against Northwestern on Tuesday, November 20.
The win was Coach Greg Van Soelen's 200th of his career against 148 losses in 12-plus seasons as head coach.
