Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Grand View

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt men cruised to their first victory of the 2007-2008 season at home against Grand View College. Dordt came into the game 0-2 after suffering losses to 8th-rated Jamestown College and Valley City State last weekend. Grand View was 1-2 before tonight's loss.

Dordt was first on the scoreboard off a basket by Brian Eekhoff, assisted by Michael Eekhoff. Grand View put up their first two points of the game off of free throw shots by Pat Hoberg. Dordt held Grand View to two points for the first 7:30 of play, while scoring 13 of their own. Grandview fought back to get within 7 points half-way through the first half, but wouldn't come any closer the rest of the game. Free throws and three-point baskets by Russ Griese, Scott Van Zanten, and Eric Van Maanen helped Dordt charge to a 29 point lead at the half.

Dordt commanded the second-half, extending their lead to 30 points with 8:17 remaining with most of the starters on the bench. Dordt ended the 38-point win with a pull-up three point basket by Josh Taylor at the buzzer.

All of Dordt's players were in on the first victory of the season, gaining playing time with a large lead throughout the game. Dordt outscored Grand View 43-34 in the second half and outrebounded them 54-23 for the game. The Defenders converted on 12 Grand View turnovers for 13 points. Both teams got help from the bench with Grand View's subs totaling 27 points while Dordt's non-starters accounted for 33.

Eric Van Maanen was the leading scorer for Dordt with Scott Van Zanten and Russ Griese reaching double figures as well with 16 and 11 points respectively. Van Zanten also pulled down 8 boards. Michael Eekhoff put in 6 points, dished out 5 assists, and had one blocked shot on the night. Logan Kingma provided 9 points and 8 rebounds. Freshmen Josh Tayler scored six and Chris Van Roekel 4 with 5 rebounds off the bench. Taylor was 2-2 in three point shots on the night and had 2 assists.

Grand View's Pat Hoberg had 17 points and seven rebounds while Dan Brandhorst came off the bench to score ten.

With the win, Dordt is now 1-2, having faced all non-conference opponents thus far. They will face York College at home on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
