Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Valley City State (ND)

(Valley City, North Dakota) The Dordt College Defenders surrendered a 76-65 decision to the Valley City State (North Dakota) Vikings on Saturday night on the road, dropping to 0-2 with the loss.
Dordt fell behind 18-5 near the midpoint of the first half but were able to recover to take the lead at 23-22, using an 11-0 run to get back in the game. Dordt led 30-27 at halftime.
Dordt threatened to pull away in the second half, taking as much as a 43-36 lead but were unable to land a knockout blow that would have stretched the lead out further.
Valley City State was still down by five--55-50 when the Vikings started their comeback, using three pointers by Calvin Kraft to tie the game at 57-57 and took the lead for good at 59-57. Valley City State used a 12-3 run to stretch the lead out to 69-60 and effectively end the Defender hopes for a split of their North Dakota trip with the final coming to 76-65.
Dordt committed 24 turnovers in the loss. The Vikings held a slight 34-32 edge on the boards and Dordt made 19-49 field goals for 38.8 percent while Valley City State made 23-57 shots for 40.4 percent.
Eric Van Maanen led Dordt with 14 while Brian Eekhoff had 13 and Michael Eekhoff chipped with 11 and Scott Van Zanten added 10. Chad Huenink led the Defenders with six rebounds and Jonathon Ferrie had five off the bench. Michael Eekhoff dished off seven assists.
Valley City got 20 points from Kraft who made 6-10 three-pointers while Zac Wolff had 11 with a game high nine rebounds and three steals.
Dordt is 0-2 while Valley City State improves to 2-1. Dordt will host Grand View on Wednesday at 7:30.
