(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team rolled to a 100-61 win over Dakota State in non-conference action Tuesday night at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Defenders allowed a three-pointer to open the scoring and were down 5-2 before going on a seven point run to take the lead 9-5 on Brian Eekhoff jump shot. Dakota State actually had the lead down to four at 11-7 with 13:15 remaining in the half before Defenders dominated the rest of the half. A 12-0 run took the Defenders up from 13-8 to 25-8 with Eekhoff again capping the run with a shot in the paint. The Defenders proceeded to outscore the Trojans 16-7 to establish a 41-17 lead at the 6:07 mark and went into the half up by a 47-25 margin after Mark Rowenhorst hit a floater on the baseline with :04 left.
Dordt scored the first six points of the second half on a pair of Eric Van Maanen shots and an Eekhoff two-pointer. The runaway continued with Carlie Landegent scoring nine in the second half on his way to a career high 13 points. The Defenders hit the century mark on a Landegent shot with :26 remaining.
The Defenders had 13 players, all the players they had in uniform, score at least a basket wti Landegent pacing the pack with his 13 on 6-7 shooting. Eekhoff had 12 and Scott Van Zanten and Eric Van Maanen contributed 11. Derek Keizer had nine points and six assists with Mark Rowenhorst adding nine and Chad Huenink seven. Eekhoff had team honors with five rebounds amd Eric Miedema had five assists as the Defenders lifted their record to 11-2.
Dakota State, who has now lost nine in a row dating back to a season opening win over Dana, was led by Joe Backus' 22 points on 10-21 shooting and 10 rebounds.
Dordt converted a scorching 41-59 of their shots for 69.5 percent while holding the visitors to 22-65 shooting for 33.8 percent. Dordt also held a 36-30 rebounding edge while turning it over 16 times to Dakota State's 19.
Dordt goes to Lamoni, Iowa on Thursday to face the Graceland Yellow Jackets. Gametime is at 7:30 and is the final game before Christmas for the Defenders.
