Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Hastings--GPAC Quarterfinals

(Hastings, Nebraska) In a game that wasn't for the faint of heart, the Dordt College Defenders beat the Hastings College Broncos in Hastings by a final score of 47-44.
Dordt College fell behind initially, getting down by four at 14-10 on a Jeremiah Slough basket with 11:03 left in the half. Dordt scored the next nine points with Huenink and Michael Eekhoff hitting a pair of baskets while Eric Van Maanen made Dordt's only three-pointer of the game to give the Defenders their first lead of the game at 17-14. Van Maanen then closed the run with a layup with 7:23 left in the half. Hastings took a brief lead at 24-23 only to have Dordt score the final four points of the half on free throws by Carlie Landegent and Derek Keizer.
In the second half the Defenders pulled out to an eight point lead and then eventually got up 36-27 with 13:23 left in the game on a Van Maanen three-pointer. The Broncos made a charge to tie it at 38-38 with 11:17 left on an Adam Akerson basket. The Broncos would never take the lead though as Dordt pushed back in front with buckets by Michael Eekhoff and Russ Griese and Dordt led 44-40 with just under 10:00 remaining. The final quarter of the game was as tense as could be with points coming even more grudgingly. Dordt pushed the lead to 47-40 but couldn't land the knockout punch. Hastings got a bucket with 1:39 left on a layup by Bobby Kempf and Krae Dutoit knocked down a jumper with :59 left. Dordt missed a shot on their next possession with :22 left but a Cory Fehringer shot refused to drop with under:10 left. Hastings got the offensive rebound and called a timeout. Dordt forced a turnover with :06 left on the inbounds play and had the opportunity to seal with a free throw but missed. A desperation shot by Dutoit from midcourt was off the back of the rim and Dordt advances to the semifinal round of the tournament.
Dordt made 19-56 field goals for 33.9 percent while Hastings was 17-45 for 37.8 percent. Both teams made just one three pointer and Dordt survived despite an 8-14 free throw shooting night. The Defenders won the board battle 38-30 and committed 13 turnovers to Hastings' 11.
Dordt was led in scoring by Brian Eekhoff's 12 points while Eric Van Maanen had 10 and Logan Kingma had seven. Kingma, Eekhoff and Scott Van Zanten each had seven rebounds Van Zanten had three assists with Michael Eekhoff and Brian Eekhoff both dishing out two.
Hastings was topped by Krae Dutoit's 11 and Bobby Kempf had eight but was limited to just two points after scoring thee first six points of the game for Hastings.
Dordt advances to the GPAC semifinals to face Northwestern on Saturday at 3:00 in Orange City, Iowa.
