February 20, 2007
(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt's basketball team was back in action tonight in the first round of the GPACC tournament. They faced up against Mount Marty at home and came out on top, 59-57.
In this hard fought battle neither team led by more than 5 for the first 14:23. Dordt finally extended their lead to 6 when Scott Van Zanten hit a free-throw. Dordt continued to lead the rest of the half and went to the locker rooms leading 37-30.
The second half started off slow for the Defenders and Mount Marty slowly chipped away at the lead. Mount Marty tied the game at 43 with 11:55 left in the game and took their first lead of the half at 48-47 off a Nathan Fischer 3 point basket. Dordt regained the lead until Mount Marty tied it back up at 57 with 16 seconds left on a Chris Filsinger three-pointer. It was Filsinger's first made three pointer of the season.
With 3 seconds left Eric Van Maanen gave Dordt the lead by two on a baseline bucket. Mount Marty failed to connect on a desperation 3 point basket and Dordt took the game, 59-57.
Dordt was led by Brian Eekhoff who scored 12 points and also pulled down 11 boards. Scott Van Zanten followed with 10, 4 of which came at the line. Dordt shot 40.7 percent from the field and connected on 33 percent of their 3 point field goals. Mount Marty was led by Pat Anderson who scored 11 while two others, Nathan Fischer and JJ Heyden scored 9. Mount Marty shot only 62 percent from the line and got outrebounded 43-32.
