(Seward, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team snapped a three game losing streak in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball Saturday in Seward, Nebraska with a 72-66 win over the Concordia Bulldogs. The Defenders trailed by as many as six at 20-14 with 12:19 left in the half. A Chad Huenink 17 foot jumper cut the lead down to four and the Defenders eventually tied the game at 24 on a basket by Logan Kingma with 7:55 left. Concordia refused to give the lead up easily, re-establishing a four point lead at 30-26 on a pair of Jon Ziegler free throws.
A Scott Van Zanten tied it at 31-31 with 3:00 left and the Defenders took their first lead since the early going with a 5-3 run going into the half. The two teams traded buckets on several possessions with the Bulldogs getting as close as one on two different occassions. Seven points in a row by Dordt pushed the lead to eight with 12:39 left in the half on a Jon Ferrie hook shot in the lane. Dordt increased the lead to as many as 13 wtih just over seven minutes remaining and rode that lead to the six point win, the closest Concordia would get at the end.
Dordt made 24-50 shots from the floor and converted 22-30 free throws. The Defenders got 17 points from Brian Eekhoff on 4-8 shooting and 9-12 free throws. Scott Van Zanten had 14 points and had a game high 10 rebounds. Eric Van Maanen added 10 and Logan Kingam had nine. Russ Griese, Chad Huenink and Jonathon Ferrie had six, five and four points respectively off the bench. Van Maanen had a team high four steals.
Concordia made 23-58 shots for 39.7 percent and converted just 6-22 three-pointers. Jon Ziegler had a game high 25 points, 16 of them in the first half. Scott Hannon added 23 with both players snaring eight rebounds a piece.
Dordt improves to 6-3 in the league while Concordia is now 0-9 in the loop. The win was the first for the Dordt College men at the Seward, Nebraska based school.
