Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Mount Marty

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Mount Marty Lancers handed the Dordt College Defender men's basketball team their first loss in conference play on Wednesday night 73-70 at the De Witt Gym on Dordt College's campus.
The Defenders jumped out to an early lead of 10-4 but the Lancers bounced back for a 9-0 run to take a 13-10 lead with 13:24 left in the first half on a Chris Filsinger lay-up. Dordt fought back to tie it at 22 on an Eric Van Maanen three-pointer with 8:34 left in the half and tied it again at 25-25 on a Russ Griese three-pointer with 7:18 left.
Mount Marty pulled away to a six point lead of 36-30 with 2:13 left on a JJ Heyden basket. Dordt did put more pressure on in the final minutes of the half, cutting the lead to 39-36 on a runner by Scott Van Zanten as time expired.
Mount Marty immediately took control in the second half, pushing the lead to nine at 45-36 with 18:19 left in the game. The Defenders fought back to within one at 53-52 on a jump shot by Van Maanen with 11:10 left in the game. Mount Marty responded with a flurry to re-establish a ten point lead at 66-56, 69-59 and 71-61 with 5:41 remaining. Dordt then went on a 9-0 run over the next four-plus minutes to get within one at 71-70. Dordt got the ball on a rebound with :30 remaining and called a timeout. The Defenders ran a play to Scott Van Zanten who sliced on the right side of the lane and missed a contested shot and the rebound, after exchanging hands, ended up in Pat Anderson's hands with :02.8 remaining and he was fouled. Anderson made both free throws to give the Lancers the 73-70 lead and a three-point shot by Russ Griese as time expired rimmed out, preventing overtime.
Dordt was led by Eric Van Maanen's 16 points while Scott Van Zanten converted 12. The Defenders made 29-56 shots for 51.8 percent and had Russ Griese and Chad Huenink in double digits with 11 and 10 respectively as well. Brian Eekhoff had nine points and six rebounds while Derek Keizer added eight points and four assists. Mark Rowenhorst came off the bench to hadn out four asissts and Van Zanten had three steals.
Mount Marty was led in scoring by JJ Heyden's 21 points on 8-14 shooting from the floor and 5-9 free throws. Chris Filsinger added 16 and Travis Ptacek 14 as the Lancers converted 26-55 shots and 16-23 free throws to Dordt's 8-10 night from the free throw line. Both teams had a total of 29 rebounds.
Dordt slips to 5-1 in the conference and 12-5 overall while Mount Marty improves ot 7-10 overall and 3-4 in the league. The Defenders will now embark on a three game road swing against Hastings, Sioux Falls and Concordia over the next ten days.
