December 29, 2006
The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team lost a 70-64 decision to the Dominican (California) Penguin basketball team at the Holy Names New Year's Classic in Oakland, California.
The Defenders trailed from the outset, allowing a three-point basket by Dominican to start the scoring. Dordt trimmed a lead that was six at 15-9 down to a tie with 9:00 remaining in the first half at 17-17. The Penguins went on a 10-0 run over the next 2:36 to extend the lead to 27-17 before Mark Rowenhorst broke the string with a floater on the baseline. Dominican actually ran the lead up to 13 at 34-21 before a Russ Griese basket off an inbounds play and a tap-in by Carlie Landegent off a missed lay-in the buzzer made it a nine point game, 34-25 at halftime.
Dordt came back with pressure defense in the second half and fought back to a 41-41 tie with 14:30 left in the game. A Pat Fahy three-pointer gave the Penguins the lead back, beginning a 14-4 run by the San Rafael, California based school. Trailing 55-45, the Defenders made one more charge, getting the lead down to 55-54 on a Chad Huenink basket with 6:10 left in the game but the ensuing free-throw was off the mark and Dordt would never be within striking distance the rest of the game. With 2:15 left the Defenders were down 62-56. The lead steadily grew for the Penguins and a three-point basket by Russ Griese for Dordt College just before the horn made the final 70-64.
