Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball ran their Great Plains Athletic Conference record to 5-0 with a 73-61 victory over Briar Cliff on Saturday in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The two teams played to a 7-7 tie with 15:32 left on an Adi Cizmic jump shot. Dordt regained the lead on a Brian Eekhoff shot from the free throw line but the Chargers kept coming, and eventually took the lead at 18-17 on a basket by Dehonis Williams. The two teams traded leads with Briar Cliff going up 22-21 on a three-pointer by Danny Tighe but a Kris VanderKooy three answered to give Dordt a lead they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the way. An Eric Van Maanen three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Defenders a 31-27 halftime lead.
The Defenders raced out to a seve point lead in the second half but the Chargers trimmed the lead down and eventually tied it at 36 and 38 but never took the lead. The two were tied again at 40 after Kelvin Adams free throws with 13:18 left but the Defenders slowly increased their lead and took a double digit lead with 3:28 left on another shot by Eekhoff and the game was never close the rest of the way.
Dordt made 39.7 percent of their shots (23-58) while Briar Cliff was 22-48 for 45.8 percent. The Chargers held a narrow 37-36 rebounding edge but committed 22 turnovers to Dordt's 11. Dordt converted 21-29 free throws while Briar Cliff made 10-18.
The Defenders were paced by Eric Van Maanen's 17 points and Derek Keizer and Brian Eekhoff both had 14. Van Maanen also snared six rebounds with Scott Van Zanten, Eekhoff and Mark Rowenhorst taking in five. Keizer had five assists and three steals in the win.
Briar Cliff was led by Dehonis Williams with 16 on 4-5 shoting from the floor and 8-14 free throw shooting and Adi Cizmic had 15 points and eight rebounds.
Dordt is 5-0 in the conference and will not play another conference game until after the first of the year. Dordt is 10-2 overall and will face Dakota State in Sioux Center on Tuesday and Graceland on Thursday in Lamoni. Briar Cliff drops to 3-8 overall and 0-6 in the league.
