Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Buena Vista

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team dropped a 66-61 overtime decision in Sioux Center Wednesday night in non-conference basketball against the Buena Vista Beavers after storming back from an 11 point second half deficit.

The Defenders and Beavers traded baskets early with eight ties up until an 18-18 score with 6:11 left in the first half. Buena Vista proceeded to outscore the Defenders 11-2 heading into halftime with Brian Fogleman doing the bulk of the damage with 12 first half points for Buena Vista.

Dordt fought back to within 35-32 with 13:38 remining on a three-pointer from Derek Keizer but the Beavers ran away on a seven point run capped by another Fogleman basket. Buena Vista threatened to blow the game open when Andre Wagner hit a three-point shot with 8:01 remaining but missed on the four-point play opportunity with a missed free throw.

Dordt proceeded to play their most inspired basketball of the night over the next eight minutes, cutting the lead to single digits on a layup by Derek Keizer with 6:32 left. Brian Eekhoff knocked down a midrange jumper with 5:46 remaining to make it 45-38. A three-pointer by Logan Kingma with 5:12 left kept the Defenders alive at 45-41 and a Kris Vander Kooy three-pointer kep the pressure on with 2:38 left to make it 45-44. Fogleman got fouled on the next possession and made one out two shots, his first made free thow of the season after entering the game 0-11 from the charity stripe. Brian Eekhoff answered with a basket off an assist by Derek Keizer with :25 left to tie it, the 9th of the night, and a free throw conversion on the same play made it 47-46. Buena Vista missed a jumper iwth :06 left and Derek Keizer was fouled and made one of two free throws. Off the missed shot Rahn Franklin raced the length of the court and with :00.7 remaining, the 53 percent free throw shooter knocked both free throws down to send the game to overtime tied 48-48.

Buena Vista scored the first nine points of the extra session and Dordt got no closer than three the rest of the way, losing for the first time since November 3, 66-61.

Dordt made 26-60 shots from the floor for 43 percent while converting 5-21 three-pointers and just 4-6 free throw tries. Buena Vista got to the free throw line 23 times and made 14 while converting 24-69 shots from the floor and 4-20 three-pointers. Dordt was led by Derek Keizer's 20 points on 8-11 shooting and Brian Eekhoff added 11 with Eric Van Maanen and Logan Kingma hitting for seven each. Kingma also had nine rebounds while Keizer, Van Maanen and Eekhoff all had six rebounds. Dordt was outrebounded 47-39 including 20 offensive rebounds for Buena Vista.

The Beavers, now 5-1 for the year, were led by Fogleman's 21 points on 10-12 shooting and Andre Wagner added 15. Fogleman also had 12 rebounds.

Keizer had six assists for teh Defenders while Russ Griese, Kingma and Eekhoff all had two.

Dordt College is 9-2 overall and will face Briar Cliff on Saturday for the second time this season. Dordt beat Briar Cliff in mid November 86-67.
