Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Midland (NE)

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team overcame an eight-point second half deficit to score a 77-68 win over the Midland Lutheran Warriors in Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Saturday in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Defenders handed Midland Lutheran their first loss of the conference season and in the process stayed perfect in four conference starts. The Defenders had the upper hand through most of the first half, leading by as many as six on a couple different occasions, the last time on an Eric Miedema layup with 1:50 left to go in the half. Midland Lutheran managed to cut into the lead before the half and trimmed the difference all the way down to one at 36-35 on a pair of Zac Gradoville free throws with :21 left in the initial session.
Midland Lutheran had the energy early in the second half, outscoring the Defenders 14-5 in the first 3:56 of the period to take a 49-41 lead. After a timeout, the Defenders went to a zone defense and got a basket by Chad Huenink to make it a six point difference, got a defensive stop and got a three-pointer from Logan Kingma, got another stop and sent Scott Van Zanten to the free throw line to cut the lead down to one on a pair of free tries. Van Zanten then hit a layup to give Dordt a lead with 12:54 left in the game. Dordt would never trail again. Midland Lutheran did tie it at 50-50, but the Defender kept the run going with a seven point run, capped on jumper by Eric Van Maanen with 9:25 left. In all, the Defenders went on a 15-1 run from the 16:04 mark to the 9:25 mark.
Midland Lutheran got to within four at the 6:47 mark but a basket by Brian Eekhoff gave the Defenders some breathing room and the Defenders made enough of their free throws, 14-20 in the second half, to seal the win, their ninth in a row since a season opening loss to Jamestown the first weekend in November.
Dordt made 27-55 shots from the floor for 49 percent and were led by Logan Kingma with 18. Brian Eekhoff converted 6-8 field goals for a total of 15 points and Scott Van Zanten, playing in his first game in two weeks because of an eye injury, scored 11. Van Maanen had nine second half points and Kingma led Dordt with seven rebounds while dishing out two assists, blocked two shots and had two steals. Derek Keizer had six points and three assists with one steal and two blocks. Mark Rowenhorst was the top assist man with five and Carlie Landegent had three blocked shots in the first half. Eric Miedema had a total of five steals for the winners.
Midland Lutheran had five players in double figures with Chad Cruise hitting for his season average with 18. Luke Simons added 13 and Zac Gradoville, Adam Schmoldt and John Connot added 10 each. Connot had a game high 15 rebounds.
Dordt is 4-0 in league play and sit atop the conference with Hastings College, one of three teams along with Dordt and Midland Lutheran to enter the day unbeaten in the league, lost to Mount Marty in Yankton, South Dakota.
Dordt College will face Buena Vista on Wednesday night, December 6 in Sioux Center at 7:30.
