Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux City, Iowa) Dordt stretched their winning streak to six with a win over Briar Cliff in the teams' conference opener. Dordt, now 6-1 overall, dropped the Chargers to 3-3 on the season.
Dordt took an early lead, extending it to 14 points by the half. The Defenders stretched their lead to 22 on a Russ Griese three-pointer with 13:03 left in the game and threatened to blow the Chargers out at the Newman Flanagan Center. The Chargers rallied though, scoring seven points in a row to cut the lead to a more managable fifteen point difference. The Chargers eventually cut the lead to eight with 4:57 remaining at 72-64. Two baskets by Chad Huenink pushed the lead up to double digits and the Chargers surrendered a couple runout baskets by the Defenders as Dordt College coasted to the 19 point win.
Eric Van Maanen was Dordt's leading scorer for the fourth game this season with 18 points. Three other Defenders reached double-digit scoring with as many players leading the team in rebounds. Derek Keizer, Scott Van Zanten, and Logan Kingma each pulled in six boards on the night. Brian Eekhoff had 13 points, Logan Kingma 12 and Van Zanten left the game early after an 11 point effort with an eye injury.
Briar Cliff was led by Neil Rohe's game high 22 points. Kurt Webb was the only other Charger in double figures with 15. Dordt's defense limited Adi Cizmic, Briar Cliff's leading scorer, to six poitnts.
Dordt outshot Briar Cliff from the free throw line, making 20-28 attempts while Briar Cliff made 14-25. Dordt College also got eight points from Russ Griese off the bench with Derek Keizer handing out eight assists and snagging three steals. Van Maanen had five assists and five steals.
Dordt will go to Northwestern with a 4-0 record on the road and face a 5-1 Northwestern team. Northwestern is also 1-0 in the conference following a 91-63 win over Mount Marty tonight.
