Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Grace

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team survived a sub-par shooting night from the free throw line to defeat a visiting Grace (Nebraska) Royal team 72-70 in non-conference basketball Wednesday night at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Defenders took a 21-17 lead on five straight points by Kris Vander Kooy wtih 9:51 left in the first half. Grace proceeded to score eight points in a row to take the lead for the rest of the half. Jason Eccleston scored five of the points in the run.
Dordt stagnated for much of the rest of the half, trailing by nine 37-28 with 1:27 left in the half. The Defenders finally sparked to life with a two point basket by Chad Huenink, one of two baskets the junior from Brookfield, Wisconsin scored in the first half for the Defenders. Grace squandered an opportunity to go into the half up by a wide margin when Derek Keizer and Eric Van Maanen had back to back steals and baskets wtih under :21 left to make it 37-34.
Dordt tied teh game at 45 on a basket by Chad Huenink with 14:54 left and took their first lead of the second half when Huenink made an awkward layup, ending up on his stomach out of bounds as the ball passed over the lip of the rim. The visitors refused to fade, withstanding each Dordt charge, the Royals tied it at 47, again at 51 and took a three point lead at 61-58 on a three point play by Scott Angelo, on his way to a game high 27 points. Will Bruinsma answered with his only three of the game on the ensuing possession and the Defenders took the lead for good at 64-63 on a jump shot by Logan Kingma. Grace cut the lead down to one on two occasions at 66-65 with 1:55 left and 69-68 with 1:00 left but the Defenders made just enough free throws, the last one by Logan Kingma with :10 remaining to seal the game.
Dordt was led by Brian Eekhoff with 16 points and Scott Van Zanten added 13 while Huenink scored 12 off the bench. Kingma just missed double figures with nine and was the team leader in rebounds with nine as the teams fought to a 40-40 standoff on the boards.
Angelo led all scorers with 27 on 12-17 shooting from the floor and snared 11 rebounds while Paul Putz had 18 points and nine rebounds.
Dordt converted just 13-28 free throws and were 28-65 from the floor. Grace made 29-59 field goals and converted on 8-13 free throws.
Dordt is now 5-1 and have won five games in a row and will travel to Briar Cliff on Saturday for their conference opener. Grace drops to 1-4 and have lost three games by a combined nine points. This was the first meeting between Dordt College and the Omaha based school.
