November 11, 2006
(Sioux Falls, South Dakota)
The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team earned a convincing 81-60 win over the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon at a Classic hosted by the University of Sioux Falls.
The Defenders pulled away from a 25-25 tie late in the first half to lead 33-27 before a Sam Kim three-pointer off the glass made it 33-30 at halftime in favor of the Defenders.
The Yellow Jackets tied it up at 37-37 but the Defenders never relinquished the lead in the second half getting up 47-42 with 12:54 left in the game and used a smothering defense on Kim to outscore Black Hills State 34-18 in the final 12 minutes for the Defenders' fourth win in a row after a season opening loss to Jamestown last Friday.
Eric Van Maanen led Dordt for the second night in a row with 19 poins on 7-9 shooting and Brian Eekhoof had 17 points and eight rebounds with two assists. Logan Kingma had 12 points and five boards and Scott Van Zanten added 11 and snared nine rebounds against a team that lost on a buzzer beater the night before against Sioux Falls. Russ Griese came off the bench to score eight and grab five rebounds with two assists and Derek Keizer led the team with eight assists against just three turnovers. Dordt made 28-60 shots from the floor and outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 45-38.
Black Hills State was led by Kim's 18 points and nine rebounds and Randy Herman had 13.
Dordt is now 4-1 while Black Hills State, an old foe out of the now defunct South Dakota Iowa Conference, drops to 0-5. State has played four GPAC schools (Mount Marty, Dakota Wesleyan, Sioux Falls and Dordt) and had led at halftime of every game they played up until today.
