Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Valley City State (ND)

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men earned their first win of the 2006-2007 basketball season on Saturday afternoon at the De Witt Gym on Dordt's campus with a 70-67 win over the Valley City State Vikings.
The Defenders took their first lead of th egame on an Eric Van Maanen free throw with 14:48 left in the first half at 9-8 and never trailed again the rest of the half, holding a two point advantage at 35-33 after leading by as many as eight on two different occasions. Logan Kingma had first half points to lead the Defenders to the advantage.
The Defenders surrendered their lead at 37-35 on a Justin Curry jump shot with 18:04 remaining in the game. The Vikings extended the lead to 39-35 only to have Dordt fight back and take the lead back with 15:15 remaining in the game on a lay-in by Van Maanen. The Defenders proceeded to outscore the visitors 14-3 over the next five minutes on the way to a 55-42 advantage with 8:57 remaining.
The Vikings stormed back, scoring seven in a row and to make it a game again at 55-49. The Defenders withstood the first charge but the Vikings kept coming. Dordt led 64-59 with 1:37 left but a free throw and two steals later, the Vikings tied it at 64-64 with 1:11 remaining. Dordt responded with a free throw by Derek Keizer to retake the lead and Van Maanen scored a lay-in off a turnover to give Dordt a 67-64 lead and three free throws by Kris Vander Kooy sealed the win with a Justin Curry three-pointer at the buzzer not making a difference as Dordt won 70-67.
Dordt was led in scoring by Van Maanen's 16 and Longa Kingma's 15. Scott Van Zanten also hit for 14 points and Russ Griese came off the bench for seven. Kingma also had seven rebounds as the two teams battled even on the boards 34-34. Derek Keizer had six assists and three steals. Both teams turned the ball over a great deal with Dordt giving it up 26 times and Valley City State 27. The Defenders made 22-33 fre throws while Valley City State, a Dakota Athletic Conference member was 12-20. Justin Curry led all players with 25 points for the Vikings on 9-15 shooting and Mike Stowman hit for ten.
Dordt evened their record at 1-1 while Valley City State is 0-2.
