(Orange City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team saw their Great Plains Athletic Conference record got to 9-4 with a 96-89 loss to Northwestern in Orange City at the Bultman Center Saturday night.
The Defenders went on a ten point run midway through the first half to take a 29-19 lead but the Red Raiders, after a timeout, responded with a ten point run to knot it at 29.
The Defenders held a slight edge until Northwestern tied it at 40-40. From there the Raiders outscored Dordt 10-4 to close the half.
In the second half the Defenders fought back to take the lead at 57-56 and eventually led by four at 60-56. Northwestern came back to tie it at 60, 62 and 66. The Defenders got the lead back to 70-66 but the Red Raiders outscored Dordt 13-2 to take control and built the lead to as many as nine at 84-75. Dordt made one serious run, getting within five at 84-79 but a Mark De Younge three-pointer squashed the threat.
The Defenders weren't able to make up a twenty free-throw disparity in the game. Northwestern converted 31-39 free throws while Dordt made 15-19.
Mark Rowenhorst had a career high 22 points for the Defenders, converting 6-7 three point shots. Luke Ruter added 17 while Eric Van Maanen came off the bench to score 11. Brandon Haan had 10 points and six rebounds. Josh Boyer added nine and Brian Eekhoff eight. Ruter led Dordt with five assists.
Northwestern was led by Chad Schuiteman with 23 points and 11 rebounds while Curt Schilling added 22.
Dordt is now 9-4 in conference play and 17-6 overall while Northwestern is 19-3 and 10-2 in GPAC play and are in second place. Dordt is currently in fourth place while six other GPAC teams have seven losses, occupying 5th through 10th place.
