(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders came up with a late five point rally to earn a 75-73 win over the Morningside Mustangs in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball on Wednesday night at Allee Gym in Sioux City.
The Defenders controlled most of the first half leading by as many as 10 at 28-18 with 5:26 left in the half on a Brandon Haan lay-up. Morningside immediately cut the lead down in the following possessions on a made three-pointer by Brad Schmit and a lay-up by reserve Mike Laue. A Paul McGill three made it a two point game. That lead held until Luke Ruter got a steal and basket iwth :27 remaining only to see Brad Schmit hit another three pointer to make it 35-34 at halftime.
Morningside established control in the second half, gaining a seven point lead on a three-pointer by Jack Rother to make it 60-53 with 9:10 remaining. A Brandon Haan three-point basket cut the lead to 61-59 but Morningside had an answer pushing the lead to 68-61 on a Tom Regan short basket with 4:17 remaining. It was one of only two baskets the senior post player for Morningside would score.
Dordt got to within three on two different occasions but eventually trailed 72-67 with 2:24 remaining. From there Dordt would score eight in a row. Ruter made two free throws with 2:04 left, Scott Van Zanten hit a lay-in wth 1:06 remaining to cut the lead to one and Mark Rownhorst drilled an 18 foot shot with :16 left after Morningside had turned it over to give Dordt the lead. After a missed Morningside shot Rowenhorst was fouled and made both free throws, giving Dordt a 77-74 advantage. After an intentional foul just past midcourt, the Mustangs made one of two free throws and got the ball out of bounds after the rebound was last touched by Dordt. A shot by Tom Regan off an inbounds lob play with less than a second left was short and Dordt had the regular season sweep of the Mustangs, lifting them into a 9-3 tie for third with Morningside in the GPAC standings.
