Dordt College Baseball vs. Valley City State

(Tucson, Arizona) The Dordt College baseball team battled but couldn’t secure a sweep of the Valley City State Vikings on Thursday in Tucson, Arizona, losing game two of the doubleheader 5-4.

After giving up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first, the Defenders bounced back with two runs on two hits in the top of the second. Jason Wapnick got the rally going with a single and John Holwerda was hit by a pitch with two outs. A Dane Le Platt triple got both runs in and tied the score.

The Vikings retook the lead in the fourth but Dordt again answered, this time Wapnick doubled and stole third and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Le Platt.

Valley City State regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Dordt threatened in the sixth and stranded three runners before tying the game with a run on two hits in the seventh with Aaron Parks knocking in Cameron Gingerich with a single.

Dordt couldn’t hold the lead as they surrendered a run in the bottom of the seventh as Jake Rambow was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to finish the game 5-4.

Dordt was outhit 9-8 and stranded eight runners to nine stranded by the Vikings. John Drenten took the loss in relief, giving up one run on two hits in an inning and a third. Michael Grady started the game and went five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Wapnick continues to swing a hot bat and had three hits and two runs scored. Gingerich had two hits and LePlatt, Andy Kollbaum and Parks all had one hit each.

Dordt is 7-4 and will face Central to conclude the Arizona trip on Friday, March 14.
