Dordt College Baseball vs. Northwestern

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders and Northwestern Red Raiders combined for 38 runs and 42 hits in a wild 22-16 win for Northwestern in game two of the doubleheader in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Northwestern took a 17-5 after a 12 run third inning and a three run fifth inning made it 20-5.

Dordt got one run back in the sixth inning to make it 20-6.

Needing five runs to extend the game to the eight inning, the Defenders were able to avoid the ten-run difference rule with a ten run seventh inning.

Jason Wapnick and Nathan Fraley were both hit by pitches to open the inning and Nathan Forseth doubled in a run. Alex Schoonhoven was hit by a pitch to lad the bases and a Northwestern pitching change followed. Bryan Wallman promptly deposited the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to make it 20-11. Dordt plated five more runs before the inning was over with Schoonhoven delivering a two run double to cap the scoring.

Northwestern answered with two runs in the eighth and Josh Turner allowed one hit for the Raiders over the final two innings as Northwestern secured the 22-16 win and second place in the GPAC.

Jake Thayer led the Dordt offense as he went 5-5 at the plate. Nathan Fraley was 3-4 with three runs scored and Jason Wapnick and Nathan Forseth both had two hits.

Alec Forbes was 4-7 at the plate with four runs batted in and Eric Widener had three hits and four runs scored. Davis Bloemendaal had three hits and three runs batted in and two runs scored.

Both teams employed five pitchers in the marathon with Lucas Carls taking the loss for Dordt in two and two-third innings of work.

Dordt was outhit 25-17. Northwestern sent 63 batters to the plate and Dordt had 51 plate appearances.

Dordt concludes the season with an 11-29 overall record and 4-16 in the GPAC. Northwestern is 38-9 overall and 16-4 in the GPAC.
