Dordt College Baseball vs. Mount Marty

(Yankton, South Dakota) The Dordt College baseball team lost a 9-4 decision to Mount Marty in non-conference baseball on Tuesday night in Yankton, South Dakota. The Defenders led briefly after a four run fifth inning but the Lancers came back with seven runs over their final four at-bats to win the single nine inning contest 9-4.
The Lancers scored two runs on two hits in the second inning for a 2-0 lead. Dordt finally broke through with four runs in the top of the fifth inning after going without a hit in the first four innings. Nathan Fraley walked to start the inning and stole second. Fraley stole third base with one out and Nathan Forseth was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Jon Holwerda followed with a single that scored Fraley and Alex Schoonhoven reached on an error. Forseth eventually scored on a passed ball and Cameron Gingerich singled in Holwerda.
Mount Marty struck for two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a hit and an error.
Dordt stranded one in the sixth and Mount Marty took the lead on a hit and an error. Dordt again got a base runner in the seventh but came up empty and another in the eighth but couldn’t push either runner across to tie it. The Lancers put the game away with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth and the Defenders went in order in the ninth to end it.
Dordt was outhit 10-4 with Gingerich, Jason Wapnick, Holwerda and Schoonhoven all getting a hit each. Wapnick’s double was the lone extra base hit.
Dordt’s pitchers allowed four earned runs and walked three and struck out one. Tyler Wiedner started the game and went five innings and allowed four runs on five hits with two walks. Josh Peterson took the loss, working the sixth inning and was charged with a run on one hit. Alex Terpstra pitched an inning and a third with four runs allowed on four hits and allowed one earned run. Michael Grady got the final two outs and allowed a walk.
Dordt is 10-21 and will travel to Morningside on Thursday in Sioux City and will host Mount Marty in conference play on Saturday. Mount Marty is 18-18.
