(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Warriors of Midland overpowered Dordt College late and notched an important sweep with an 8-4 victory on a sunny Sioux Center afternoon.

Midland scored in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to break up a 4-4 tie. Garrett Mills delivered three RBIs in the game, and the Warrior bullpen allowed just one run in five innings to solidify the win.

Midland jumped out in front 2-0 on a Mills two-RBI single in the second inning. However, Dordt answered back with three runs in the third.

Cameron Gingerich drove across a run with an opposite-field RBI double to plate Jake Thayer, then Dane LePlatt tied the game three batters later with an RBI single of his own. That set up Nate Fraley, who beat out a ground ball to short after shortstop Vinnie Orsi bobbled the ball, allowing runner Andy Kollbaum to score, making it 3-2 Defenders.

Midland manufactured two runs to retake the lead in the fifth. The damage came when clean-up hitter Jake Kinsella drove an RBI single to bring in Jordyn Van Atta, and Jake Loftus knocked in another run with an RBI groundout to third.

The Defenders quickly tied the game at four when LePlatt cracked a long home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning, his second of the season. That would be the final tally of the game for Dordt, however.

Midland took advantage of a throwing error by Dordt pitcher Nathan Forseth to take a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning when Forseth’s throw to first base traveled down the right field line after the pitcher fielded a bunt. Cole Gray’s sacrifice fly one batter later made it 6-4.

The Warriors made it 7-4 on a Garrett Mills RBI single in the seventh inning, then made it 8-4 on a run-scoring walk by Jake Loftus in the eighth.

Relievers Rob Wheeler and Cody Pollack kept the Defenders at bay in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

Dordt fell to 10-20 (3-9) with the loss, and Midland advanced to 31-13 (10-2).

Dordt takes on Mount Marty in Yankton, S.D., on April 15.
