Dordt College Baseball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender baseball jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game two of their doubleheader with Briar Cliff but the hosts came back with eight runs over their final five frames to win the game 8-7 and got a sweep of Dordt in GPAC play Friday afternoon, April 11.
Dordt opened with three runs on three hits in the first inning. Jason Wapnick knocked in a run with a double and Dane LePlatt had a single that scored Wapnick with an error. Nathan Fraley finished the scoring with a run scoring double.
Two runs on three hits in the second inning followed with Andy Kollbaum knocking in one of the runs with a single in the second inning. Jon Holwerda plated a pair of runs with a single in the third inning for Dordt’s sixth and seventh runs.
Briar Cliff got two runs in the bottom of the third inning and another in the fourth after Dordt left two on base in the top of the inning. The Chargers crept a run closer in the fifth inning and got within 7-6 with two runs on three hits in the sixth inning. Briar Cliff stranded three runners in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Dordt wasn’t able to push an insurance run across as they stranded Nathan Fraley at third after a two-out triple. Briar Cliff then tied it with a single in the seventh and won it with two outs on another single, this one by Dylan Romo.
Dordt outhit Briar Cliff 13-10 with Fraley getting three hits and Andy Kollbaum, Jason Wapnick and Dane LePlatt all had two hits. Le Platt scored two runs.
Lucas Carls started the game and went five and a third innings and was charged with six runs on six hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. John Drenten took the loss as he was charged with two runs after working an inning and a third.
Dordt is now 3-7 in the GPAC and 10-18 overall. Briar Cliff is 7-3 in the GPAC and 15-22 overall.
Dordt will host Midland on Saturday at 1:00.
