Dordt College Baseball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College baseball team was unable to hold a late 7-6 lead and fell to Briar Cliff in game one of their doubleheader 9-8 in eight innings.
Dordt’s Jake Thayer started the scoring with a solo homerun to lead off the first inning and Alex Schoonhoven earned an unearned run later in the inning on an error. Schoonhoven was running for Andy Kollbaum who singled. The Defenders missed an even bigger inning when they left two runners on base.
Briar Cliff scored in the bottom of the first inning on a solo homerun by Brandon Amenta. Briar Cliff also left two runners on base.
After a scoreless second inning the Defenders scored two more in the third with Kollbaum clubbing a homerun and Dane Le Platt later scored on an error when Nathan Fraley’s batted ball was misplayed.
Briar Cliff erupted for five runs on four hits to take a 6-4 lead. The Defenders recovered to score on run in the fifth with Aaron Parks knocking in Dane LePlatt. A double play ended the inning after Dordt had loaded the bases with one out.
Briar Cliff went scoreless in the fifth and Dordt came away with two runs by virtue of one hit in the top of the sixth inning. Cameron Gingerich’s double with one out got the threat going and Gingerich later scored on an error and Dane Le Platt lifted a sacrifice fly to center field for a 7-6 lead.
Briar Cliff was retired without incident in the sixth and Dordt took a two run lead when Cameron Gingerich singled in Sam De Nooy.
Briar Cliff managed to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out scored a run on a wild pitch and another run on a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
Dordt was retired in the eighth and Briar Cliff won it on a single with two outs that scored the runner from second.
Dordt outhit Briar Cliff 12-11. Jake Thayer, Cameron Gingerich, Andy Kollbaum and Nathan Fraley all had two hits. Gingerich and Fraley each had doubles with singles and Thayer and Kollbaum had homeruns and singles.
Ben Van Kekerix pitched four innings and allowed six runs on eight hits with no walks and struck out one. John Drenten pitched two innings of hitless ball and walked two with no runs allowed. Cole Samuelson faced five batters in the seventh and was charged with two runs. Michael Grady took the loss in an inning and a third of work and was charged with a run with two hits and walked one.
