Dordt College Baseball vs. Concordia

(Seward, Nebraska) The Dordt College baseball team won an 8-6 game two decision over Concordia on Saturday afternoon in Seward, Nebraska. The win got Dordt back to .500 in the conference and 10-12 overall with a busy week of three conference doubleheaders coming up next week.
A four run fifth inning got the Defenders in front for good as they held on to win the scheduled nine inning game. Doubleheaders in the GPAC this season consist of a seven inning game and a nine inning contest.
Dordt got one run in the first inning with Jake Thayer doubling down the rightfield line and a Cameron Gingerich single moved him to third. After a fielder’s choice took Gingerich of the bases Aaron Parks lifted a fly ball to the outfield that scored Thayer.
Concordia got a run on a solo homerun in the second and two more runs in the third on a pair of hits to take a 3-1 lead. Dordt went scoreless in the third and the Bulldogs went up 5-1 with two more runs in the fourth inning.
Dordt the home team in the scorebook because the game was originally scheduled for Sioux Center, finally struck for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with Nathan Fraley sending Dane Le Platt in after Le Platt reached on a triple to start the inning. A Jason Wapnick double scored Fraley and Jon Holwerda added a single to make the game 5-4.
Dordt kept the pressure on with a four run inning in the fifth. Le Platt, Fraley and Bryan Wallman all had run scoring singles and Le Platt scored on a passed ball.
Concordia got one run back in the eighth off of Michael Grady who relieved starter Lucas Carls in the inning. Dordt threatened with two hits in the eighth but left two runners stranded and John Drenten came on to work a perfect ninth for the save.
Carls got his first win in three decisions while scattering seven hits, five runs and walked three with five strikeouts.
Le Platt had three hits and two runs scored and Fraley scored two runs and knocked in two. Gingerich and Andy Kollbaum both had two hits as Dordt outhit Concordia 13-8.
Dordt is scheduled to host Nebraska Wesleyan on Monday with the doubleheader starting at 4:00. Dordt is 3-3 in the GPAC and 10-12 overall while Concordia is 2-4 and 12-18.
