Dordt College Baseball vs. Peru State

(Peru, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defenders fought back from an early deficit but were unable to hang on in falling to Peru State in game two of the doubleheader in Peru, Nebraska on Friday afternoon. The win gave Peru State a pair of one run wins in the sweep with the 8-7 victory.

Peru State got to starter Lucas Carls for three runs on five hits in the first inning, putting the Defenders into a comeback situation. Dordt scraped out a run in the top of the second inning with Aaron Parks scoring on a ground out by Jason Wapnick to the right side of the infield. The Defenders got another run back in the third when Cameron Gingerich scored on an Aaron Parks single to make it 3-2.

Dordt took the lead with three runs in the fifth inning. Anthony Maule singled with the bases loaded two score two and Jason Wapnick delivered a single that scored Andy Kollbaum.

The hosts regained the lead with four runs in the fifth inning on four hits and a Dordt error to give them a 7-5 lead.

Dordt scored a run on an error in the sixth inning and a Kollbaum double with two outs scored Cameron Gingerich to tie the game at 7-7.

Dordt stranded two runners in the seventh inning to leave the score tied. The first two batters in the Peru State seventh were retired but a walk and a stolen base got a runner in scoring position and a single ended the game.

Dordt was outhit 11-9. Dane LePlatt had two hits and scored a run while Maule and Wapnick both had two runs batted in with a base hit each. Gingerich scored two runs and Kollbaum had Dordt’s only extra base hit, a double.

Lucas Carls started the game and went four innings and allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Josh Van Kekerix went one inning and was charged with four runs on four hits and struck out two and Cole Samuelson took the loss going the final inning and two-thirds and allowed one run, a walk and a hit.

Dordt is now 7-7 and has lost four one run decisions in a row. The Defenders look to snap that skid at home against Mayville State on Tuesday. Peru State improves to 12-5.
