Dordt College Baseball vs. Dakota State

(Tucson, Arizona) The Dordt College baseball team won an 11-5 decision over Dakota State on Monday in Tucson, Arizona. The Defenders scored three runs in the second inning to take the lead for good and went on to win their sixth game to start the season.

Dakota State got on the board with two runs on a hit and an error in the first inning but Dordt bounced back with three in their half of the second with Jake Thayer knocking a run in with a single. Dane LePlatt also had a run scoring single and Cameron Gingerich knocked in a run with a single.

After a scoreless second and third for Dakota State the Defenders erupted for six runs on five hits in the top of the fourth inning. Nathan Fraley had an rbi single and Jason Wapnick walked a run in with the bases loaded. Anthony Kollbaum got a run in with a sacrifice fly and Bryan Wallman belted a triple for two runs batted in. A Jon Holwerda single scored Wallman and ended the scoring as Dordt sent ten batters to the plate.

John Drenten came on in relief of Aaron Parks who left the game with one out in the fourth and worked into the sixth ining when he gave way to Jeremy Engbers after Dakota State scored three runs to cut the Dordt lead to 11-5. Dordt had stretched the lead to 11-3 on a Kollbaum double that scored Anthony Maule and Holwerda knocked in another run with a single.

Engbers worked a scoreless seventh after Dordt left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to preserve the win and get the save.

Dordt is 6-0 after play on Monday and will face Jamestown (North Dakota) on Tuesday in a doubleheader.

Jake Thayer was 3-5 with a run scored and a run batted in. Holwerda and Le Platt both had two hits with Holwerda knocking in two runs and Wallman and Kollbaum both got a pair of runs batted in. Aaron Parks worked three and a third innings with two hits and two runs—one of them earned and struck out six. John Drenten pitched two innings and walked three and allowed three runs and five hits. Jeremy Engbers recorded the final five outs and struck out two and walked one.

Dakota State’s Robert Roman pitched three innings and took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits and struck out four.
