(Sioux Center, Iowa) By Sam Ekstrom, Dordt College Sports Information Student Assistant
Dordt earned a split in their first home series of the season, beating Hastings 3-2 with a complete-game pitching performance from Lucas Carls.
The Defenders used both the long ball and the small ball to grab the victory at Open Space Park.
Junior center fielder Nathan Fraley provided the power with a long two-run home run in the third inning to give Dordt a 2-1 lead. It was Fraley’s second bomb of the season.
In the fifth inning, the Defenders used a leadoff bunt single to break a 2-2 tie. Nick Serrato reached first on a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a groundout sent Serrato to third base, relief pitcher Christian Schneider threw a pitch to the backstop, allowing Serrato to score the go-ahead run.
With a 3-2 lead heading to the sixth inning, Carls locked in and retired the final six hitters of the game to preserve the victory and bolster his team-best ERA.
Hastings’ starter pitcher, Pat Williamson, left the game after surrendering Fraley’s home run in the third inning. He received a no-decision.
The Broncos got both their RBIs from leadoff hitter Gabe Salas: an RBI single in the third inning and a run-scoring groundout in the fifth.
Dordt moved to 4-11 (2-4) with the win. Hastings fell to 6-18 (2-4).
