A late comeback propelled the Hastings Broncos to a 5-3 victory over the Dordt College Defenders in Dordt’s home-opener.
Through four innings, the Defenders were positioned beautifully to snatch a GPAC conference win. Up 3-0 with pitcher Ben Van Kekerix mowing down hitters, the outcome looked almost guaranteed, but two runs in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth gave Hastings a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
The collapse began in the fifth inning with a Van Kekerix hit batsmen and two straight walks. After a Conner Thomas sacrifice fly and a Gabe Salas RBI groundout, the Broncos had trimmed Dordt’s lead to 3-2 without the aid of a hit in the inning.
After Hastings’ right fielder John Lamaster coaxed a leadoff walk to begin the sixth, first baseman Drew Clark delivered a two-out RBI single that tied the game at three. Moments later, third baseman Jake Steese smashed a two-run go-ahead home run to deep left-center field. The jolt gave Hastings the lead permanently.
Dordt took an early 3-0 lead, thanks in part to a critical throwing error. With the score already 1-0 following an Aaron Parks RBI single, Andy Kollbaum hit a ground ball to third base that should have ended the inning. Third baseman Steese threw the ball high at first, which extending the inning for Dordt’s Jon Holwerda. Holwerda delivered a two-run single to plate two unearned runs.
Dordt’s starting pitcher Ben Van Kekerix started off strong, retiring the first 11 hitters he faced. However, the five runs between the fifth and sixth innings knocked him out of the game after six.
Hastings’ starter Jeremy Williams rebounded from the rough first inning to complete the game and get the win, striking out seven Defenders in the process.
The Defenders fell to 3-11 (2-4) while the Broncos advanced to 6-17 (2-3).
