Dordt College Baseball vs. Mayville State
March 27, 2012
(Sioux Center, Iowa) Mayville State banged out an 8-3 win over the Dordt Defender baseball team in game one of their doubleheader in Sioux Center on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball.
The Comets, fresh off a four win weekend with Hastings, scored two runs each in the second, fifth, sixth and seventh innings while Dordt couldn't keep pace with two in the second and one in the fifth.
An Aaron Parks single scored Dustin Brisel and an Eric Torgerson base hit got Parks across to knot the score at 2-2 after two innings. Mayville State missed on an opportunity to score in the first inning when they left the bases loaded. After two more runs by the visitors in the fifth for a 4-2 lead the Defenders struck for a run in the fifth as Anthony Maule scored, running for Eric Torgerson who doubled to lead off the inning. The run was the final one Dordt would score as the visitors got four for insurance in the final two frames for the 8-3 win.
The first three runs by Mayville State were unearned as the Defenders committed two errors that cost them runs.
Both teams had nine hits with Dordt getting two hit nights from Aaron Parks, Mark Lyzenga and Eric Torgerson. Torgerson, Parks and Fraley all had doubles and Travis Dekkers and Dustin Brisel both had singles.
Jake Slings went four innings in the start and allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and three walks before being lifted for Josh Van Kekerix. Van Kekerix took the loss allowing four runs on two hits with two walks in an inning and a third. Ryan Baas pitched an inning and two-thirds to finish the game and allowed two runs on three hits. Mayville State's Victor Sofolosky got the win, working five and two-thirds innings allowing nine hits and struck out five.
