Dordt College Baseball vs. Nebraska Wesleyan

(Lincoln, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defenders couldn't make five early runs stand up as they lost to Nebraska Wesleyan in Great Plains Athletic Conference action in Lincoln on Tuesday afternoon, April 12. Dordt ended up surrendering six runs in the fifth inning before falling 14-8.
Eric Torgerson walked with the bases loaded for Dordt's first run of the game in the first ining and Brandon Van Engen delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 Dordt after one inning without benefit of a hit. Phillip Sears singled in the second to score Patrick Sinnema who had doubled to lead off the inning. A Zach Staudt ground out scored one more to make it 4-0. Sears would knock in Taylor Wyatt in the third for a 5-0 lead.
Nebraska Wesleyan started their comeback with four runs on four hits in the third. Dordt got one of the runs back with a Brandon Van Engen double scoring Travis Dekkers. Wesleyan more than kept pace with two runs in the fourth on three hits to make it 6-6. The hosts erupted for six runs on eight hits in the sixth and chased Dordt starter Lucas Carls from the game.
Down 12-6, the Defenders got back to back doubles from Zach Staudt and Eric Torgerson with one out in the sixth to score a run and Taylor Wyatt knocked in a run with a single. Wesleyan was equal to the task and got the two runs back and won by the eventual 14-8 difference as Dordt went in order in the seventh.
Dordt was outhit 17-10 wiht Sears and Wyatt both getting two hits. Sears knocked in two as did Torgerson and Van Engen. Travis Dekkers scored twice, was hit by a pitch twice and singled. Lucas Carls was the losing pitcher in four and one-third innings of work. He was charged with eight runs on nine hits and struck out five. Jeremy Engbers pitched a scoreless frame in the sixth.
