Dordt College Baseball vs. Morningside

(Sioux City, Iowa) Dordt fought back to tie game two of their doubleheader at Morningside on Saturday, April 16 but came up short in an 8-6 decision in Sioux City.
Dordt scored a run in the first when Travis Dekkers knocked in Morgan Halpert after Halpert singled. Dordt left two runners on in that frame and trailed 3-1 after Morningside got three across in the home half of the inning. Dordt countered with a run in the second with Brandon Van Engen scoring Eric Anderson on a single. Two more Morningside runs made it 5-2. Both teams were scoreless in the third.
Dordt mounted its rally in the third when they scored three times with two outs. Eric Anderson started the rally when he reached on an error. A Morgan Halpert single scored Anderson and Travis Dekkers was intentionally walked. Zach Staudt then singled in two runs. Dordt eventually loaded the bases but left them full when the inning ended. Morningside answered the challenge with three in the bottom of the fourth and were up 8-5 when Dordt scored its final run of the game on a walk issued to Lucas Carls with the bases loaded in the sixth. Dordt again left the bases loaded, missing an even bigger inning by one hit.
Dordt got the tying run as far as second in the seventh but came up empty in their last chance at the plate.
Dordt had ten hits with Van Engen, Halpert, Dekkers and Staudt all getting two hits. Staudt and Dekkers each had doubles and Dekkers was walked twice intentionally.
Brad Vande Griend took the loss after going five innings and allowed ten hits with eight walks and three strikeouts. Jeremy Engbers worked the sixth inning and walked two while striking out one and did not allow a hit.
Dordt is now 2-23 and 1-13 while Morningside is 24-13 and 10-3. Dordt is scheduled to host Briar Cliff on Monday at 4:00 in doubleheader action.
